drift #11 | Hampstead Heath Drift | feb 28, 26

This walk is different from a journey or a stroll. We will not be going anywhere in particular and our usual motivations for movement will be markedly absent. Instead, we will allow ourselves to be drawn by the attractions of the Heath’s terrain and the encounters that we may find there.

Unlike our usual walks, we will subdivide into groups of two or three people (this being the “most fruitful numerical arrangement” according to the Situationists).

Each group will head in a direction of their choice (or as psychogeographical contours of the Heath may direct them). The spacial field of the drift will be limited to the boundaries of the Heath. Where a group meets a boundary, they must turn and re-enter.

After three hours, we will return to our meeting point and compare each group’s drift to draw up a composite map. This will serve as a psychogeographical articulation of the Heath and help us understand its principal axes and pivotal points.
