a phenomenology of the city

study for larger work never completed

an osmosis between oneself and the city occurs over the course of a long walk. the experiences we have, the feelings evoked, remain both within us and the place that gave them life. if we return to that place, with the open mind a walk invites, we can re-encounter the experience born there.

a city itself is simply the product of these experiences, the many experiences of a collective that sprawls past and present (and an imagined future), experiences that shape a will exerting itself on the city.

without us the city does not exist, it serves no purpose, and unlike the city, nature, true nature cares nothing of our will, and the nature one finds in the city occurs only where we permit it, through invitation or neglect.

to walk in the city is to confront this great collective will, to nestle into the material manifestation of it, the most mundane experience is heightened to the grand theatre of the city unfurling around us.

this series of work takes those mundane experiences and casts them into the loins of the city, a visual entanglement of two subjectives, the city and a single experience of it
